Split a bank transaction
When a single charge covers more than one purpose — part grocery, part household, or part personal and part business — you can split it into labelled portions. The original bank record is never changed; the splits are stored separately and can be cleared at any time.
How to do it
Ask Clarity directly:
"Split my Costco charge from Tuesday between groceries and household supplies — $100 groceries, $87.43 household."
Clarity will:
- Find the transaction and show you a preview of the proposed split.
- Ask you to confirm.
- Save the split portions once you say yes.
Rules
- You need at least 2 portions and no more than 10.
- The amounts must add up to the original transaction total (within $0.01).
- Pending transactions cannot be split — wait until the charge posts to your account.
- Each portion needs a short label (up to 200 characters).
Changing or removing a split
To adjust a split, ask Clarity to split the transaction again with the new amounts. The old portions are replaced automatically.
To remove all splits and return the transaction to its original state:
"Remove the splits on my Costco charge" or "Undo the split on that transaction."
Common questions
Does splitting change my bank account or Plaid data?
No. The original transaction record from your bank is never modified. Splits are stored separately in ClarityTrack and only affect how the charge is labelled and categorised inside the app.
Can I assign a spending category to each portion?
Yes. When asking Clarity to split, you can specify the category for each portion (for example FOOD_AND_DRINK or GENERAL_MERCHANDISE). If you do not specify, each portion inherits the original transaction's category.
Can I split a manually entered transaction?
Currently, splitting applies to Plaid-imported bank transactions only. Manual transactions in the Debts section cannot be split.
Will splits affect my budget alerts?
Yes. If you assign a specific category to a split portion, that amount counts toward the budget for that category. For example, splitting a charge so that $100 is tagged as FOOD_AND_DRINK will count that $100 toward your grocery budget.
