Mark a bank transaction as a debt payment

When a real bank transaction is a payment toward a debt you track, mark it as a payment to avoid double-entry. Open the Transactions tab, click the transaction, and use the "Mark as payment to..." action. Pick which debt it applies to, and ClarityTrack credits the amount automatically.

How to do it

  1. From the Dashboard, click the Transactions tab.
  2. Find the transaction. Use search or filters to narrow it down quickly.
  3. Click the transaction to open its detail.
  4. Click Mark as payment.
  5. Pick the debt from the list.
  6. Confirm. The transaction is now linked to that debt, the debt balance updates, and the payment counts toward your monthly target.

Why use this instead of logging a payment manually

If your bank is connected via Plaid, every payment you make appears as a transaction automatically. Marking the transaction as a payment links the real bank record to the debt without you re-typing the amount, the date, or the bank name. It also prevents accidental double-counting if you also manually log the same payment.

Common questions

What if I have already manually logged a payment for the same transaction?

ClarityTrack detects this automatically (same date, same amount, same debt) and asks if you want to keep the manual entry, replace it with the linked transaction, or delete the manual entry. There is no risk of silent double-counting.

Can I unlink a transaction from a debt later?

Yes. Open the transaction detail and click Unlink. The debt balance recalculates without that payment.

Can Clarity do this for me?

Yes. Ask Clarity something like "mark my Chase payment from Tuesday as a payment to my credit card." Clarity will preview the link and ask you to confirm before applying it.

What if Clarity finds a payment I forgot to log?

The get_unreconciled_payments tool in Clarity surfaces bank transactions that look like debt payments but are not linked to any debt yet. Ask "find any debt payments I have not logged" and Clarity will show the candidates with one-click linking.
